Biological Science Tech (Wildlife)

The incumbent will assist professional staff in implementing wildlife research, inventory and monitoring programs for wildlife, fish and plants in several remote backcountry Alaskan parklands. The incumbent will be expected to live in primitive, remote camps in the backcountry for up to four weeks at a time while conducting field work. Field work includes:
1) conducting aerial wildlife surveys or telemetry of moose, bears, Dall's sheep, caribou, wolves, waterfowl, or other wildlife; 2) conducting aerial telemetry from a fixed-winged aircraft to locate and assess large mammal populations; 3) assisting with collecting and archiving of genetics and/or disease from large mammals; 4) conducting small mammal live-trapping; 5) assisting aquatic ecologists with sampling water quality, plankton, fish, plants and other aquatic species; 6) assisting with snowshoe hare track and pellet counts and trapping in winter and summer. The incumbent must be able to:
1) work well with minimal supervision in small field teams for extended periods of time (4 weeks); 2) use GPS for navigation and to mark waypoints; 3) carry a 50 lb backpack across mountainous and rugged terrain for long distances (10-20 miles per day) and use inflatable boats to travel along swift-running rivers; 4) work long days under stressful conditions including hoarding insects, intense sun, cold, rain, snow and/or wind and;5) fly in small aircraft to conduct wildlife surveys; 6) travel in motorboats. The incumbent will use 1) computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft Access, Excel, Word; ArcGIS, Pathfinder Office, etc.) to enter, store, retrieve and analyze data, generate maps and create reports for the various monitoring and research projects; 2) statistical software to code and analyze spatial data. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/03/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40
hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
standardized data collection protocols to document wildlife management or habitat activities; assisting with or preparing sections of wildlife management reports; collecting and managing wildlife field data at remote locations; and maintaining and organizing wildlife data using computer software. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one year (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) of directly related graduate study, which may be substituted for the required specialized experience. Graduate study must have been in a field of study that is directly related to the work of this position, i.e., scientific or technical study, such as wildlife biology, wildlife resource management, statistics, or other directly-related subject matter. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take six months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 14 semester hours of graduate study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
