Safety and Occupational Health Specialist
TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-5 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-7 level and one year at the GS-7 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-9 level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted). We must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To be creditable, this experience must have been for 1 year and equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. (If the position was seasonal, your resume must show periods worked.You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. To be creditable, experience must be in or related to safety and occupational health. Examples of specialized
Experience:
1) providing oversight and management a fire medical program; 2) purchasing medical equipment, supplies and emergency medical drugs to support the fire medical program; 3) maintain an inventory control and accountability system; and 4) ensuring proper storage and dispense of medical drugs and over-the-counter medications. (Note:
Your resume must demonstrate how you meet this requirement); OR Have successfully completed one full year of graduate level or have achieved superior academic achievement in a major study such as safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines:
safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. (Note:

To compute this, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience requirement; then determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement; add the two percentages. During the fire season, the incumbent may be subjected to long hours, varying shifts, on call status, or other stress producing conditions. The incumbent must meet the established physical requirements of the positions red-carded to perform and may frequently be required to lift and carry supplies, materials, and equipment that weigh up to 65 pounds. Moderate effort is used in operating hand and foot controls while driving or other related forklifts functions. Coordination and dexterity are required in the operation of equipment within the Fire Medical Program warehouse operations. Working Conditions:
Work is primarily in a warehouse office setting, field station or wildland fire complex. Time will be spent traveling in light fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, and wheeled vehicles. Fire and field assignments often require the incumbent to live in remote out door settings as needed, and be exposed to smokes, fire, dust, fumes, inclement weather, operating machinery and hazardous materials. Protective equipment and clothing may be required.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
