This announcement will be used to fill temporary Biological Science Technician (Avian) positions in Region 7 (Alaska) and focus on waterfowl field projects in Barrow, Alaska or Western Alaska. When not in the field, the duty station location is at the Fairbanks Fish and Wildlife Field Office in Fairbanks, Alaska. The work is temporary not-to-exceed 1,039 hours for the season (approximately 6 months). However, the work typically lasts 3-4 months and starts in early May.

As a Biological Science Technician (Avian) you will:
Lead a small group of technicians in gathering field data and provide training in techniques and procedures
Pair surveys, locate and monitor waterfowl nests
Collect eggs and blood samples for contaminant sampling
Participate in the development of work plans and schedules
Conduct surveys to collect and analyze various types of information on bird populations
Use traps and/or nets for capture, measurement, banding, and sampling
Use computer to input data or perform basic word processing
Operate a variety of field equipment including generators, radios, radio tracking equipment, handheld GPS units, satellite phones, cars and trucks, and cameras

To Qualify for a Biological Science Technician GS-06 , you must possess one of the following;
Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level or higher in the Federal service which involves a variety of support tasks related to wildlife. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: conducting avian surveys and any other work that is performed in a controlled environment which includes research activity or control program work in support of a wildlife or avian program.
OR Have completed at least 9 semester hours of graduate level education in biological sciences with course work directly related to the work of this position such as ecology, ornithology, wildlife biology, animal biology, field zoology, etc
OR Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education as described in above. To compute this, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required; then determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100% to qualify.
To Qualify for a Biological Science Technician GS-07 , you must possess one of the following:
Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level or higher in the Federal service which involves a variety of support tasks related to wildlife. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include providing technical support in completing biological study or projects; assisting with project planning, logistical arrangements, and field work; completing reports or other documents related to a project; leading a group of technicians in gathering field data; and any other work that is performed in a controlled environment in research activity or control program work in support of avian program.
OR Have successfully completed one full year or 18 semester hours of graduate level education in biological sciences with course work directly related to the work of this position such as ecology, ornithology, wildlife management, animal biology, field zoology, etc.
OR Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education as described above. To compute this, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required; then determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement; add the two percentages.
