This announcement will be used to fill temporary Biological Science Technician (Avian) positions in Region 7 (Alaska) and focus on waterfowl field projects in Barrow, Alaska or Western Alaska. When not in the field, the duty station location is at the Fairbanks Fish and Wildlife Field Office in Fairbanks, Alaska. The work is temporary not-to-exceed 1,039 hours for the season (approximately 6 months). However, the work typically lasts 3-4 months and starts in mid May.

As a Biological Science Technician (Avian) you will:
Conduct pair surveys, locate and monitor waterfowl nests
Collect eggs and blood samples for contaminant sampling
Participate in the development of work plans and schedules
Assist with surveys to collect and analyze various types of information on bird populations
Use traps and/or nets for capture, measurement, banding, and sampling
Use computer to input data or perform basic word processing
Operate a variety of field equipment including generators, radios, radio tracking equipment, handheld GPS units, satellite phones, cars and trucks, and cameras

To Qualify for the GS-05 level, you must possess one of the following;
Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level or higher in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: assembling information on avian populations and their habitats; researching and extracting data; capturing, tagging, collaring, or banding birds; assisting with collecting and compiling data; and any other research activity or control program work in support of wildlife or avian programs.
OR
Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study with at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to this occupation such as avian ecology, ornithology, wildlife biology, animal biology, field zoology, etc.
OR
Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education as described in A and B above. (To compute this, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required; then determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100% to qualify.) NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements.
