Summary:
Seeking a laboratory technician for the Department of Veterinary Medicine.
This position coordinates veterinary and laboratory materials for the DVMed teaching labs.
Participates in collaborative projects.
Helps prepare for and manage teaching labs.
Duties:
1-35Sample Maintenance and Preparation:
Independently maintains and prepares anatomical specimens for graduate learning labs and essential outreach experiences.
Provides specialist skills in maceration of animal skeletons, skeleton articulation, cadaver preservation and detailed pro-sections, as well as maintenance of custom veterinary technical equipment.
Work with faculty to ensure student learning objectives are met and ideally exceeded with available sample material.
Organ preparation for pathology and neurobiology.
Safely secure and utilize harmful chemicals, keeping accurate records.
Provides anesthesia technician services for MRI course and veterinary cases.
Essential 2-25Lab Preparation:
Independently prepares materials for lab presentations and continued resilience of the department in diversity of educational materials as older items degrade.
This includes use of specialist skills in skeleton preparation.
Essential corrosion casts, pro-sections, embalming specimens, and preparation of animal cadavers for labs.
Essential 3-20Teaching Provision:
Works in conjunction with faculty members on plan for labs, assists faculty in teaching of labs and recitations for veterinary courses and provides lab instruction in the absence of the faculty member.
Provide essential information regarding anatomical specimens, reinforce lecture-based learning, assist in graduate student dissections, and assist in preparation of examination lab materials.
Essential 4-15Organization, Logistics and Cleaning:
Facilitates and screens the suitability of donated specimens.
Inventory donated and purchased veterinary cadavers, maintains essential refrigerators, freezers and physical lab spaces.
Maintain lab order and cleanliness.
Essential 5-5Educational Outreach:
Participates in outreach activities with students and departments as needed.
Provides technical service as requested to UAF and broader educational community in areas of specialism (skeleton articulation, anatomical specimen preparation, embalming, etc.
).
Non-Essential The Department of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks a laboratory technician in animal anatomy.
Assigned duties are to prepare materials for lab presentations.
This includes skeleton preparation, corrosion casts, pro-sections, embalming specimens, and preparation of animal cadavers for labs.
Maintain and prepare samples for laboratory learning and outreach experiences.
Maceration of animal skeletons, maintenance of custom veterinary equipment.
Organ preparation for pathology and neurobiology.
Safely secure chemicals after use.
Serve as anesthesia technician for MRI course and veterinary cases.
Assist faculty in lab presentations and recitations for veterinary courses.
Assist with live animal handling for foundations, MRI and performance dog medicine.
Maintain lab order and cleanliness as well as maintain specimen inventory, refrigerators, freezers and physical lab spaces.
Assist students and departments with outreach activities as needed.
We emphasize a team teaching approach for many of the courses in the veterinary medical curriculum and the successful candidate must have good communication and teaching skills, and be able to work well with others.
Our academic commitment is to the articulated veterinary medical training program with the Colorado State University (CSU) College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS).
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Ability to process bones, tissue, organs and skeletons according to DVMed lab procedures and protocols.
Ability to work in extreme conditions.
Work well with others and be able to mentor students.
Knowledge of chemical and safety protocols.
Implementation of and enforcement of laboratory safety.
Knowledge of data collection procedures, data entry procedures, and computerized spreadsheets and databases.
Typical
Experience:
Hands on experience with biological and biomedical techniques in a professional veterinary program during teaching and in a research setting, with skill and ability to prepare and handle animal specimens.
Required Education or Training:
Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the delivery of the DVMed labs and four years relevant experience, a licensed veterinary technician is preferred or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Salary Information:
This is a full-time, 10-month (22 pay periods), FLSA-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
