NRCS is recruiting students to participate in the Pathways Internship Program. These positions are expected to be filled by May 2014. Positions to be filled are Student Trainees in Soil Science. The program allows students to gain real, paid federal work experience while pursuing a college degree in a particular career field. Work locations will vary each summer and the duties and locations are designed to provide hands on experience and training in the specific discipline for which hired.
Student Trainees must be in good academic standing, as defined by the institution they are attending, and must meet the definition of a student throughout the duration of their Internship appointment. Student Trainees who need to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic/vocational or technical course-load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this Program.
This position requires the incumbent to spend a substantial amount of time in the field which may include rugged terrain, inclement weather and dangerous wildlife. This position requires the incumbent be able to carry equipment, including a backpack and camp conditions will be very basic.
Within 120 calendar days after completing educational requirements of the position and Pathways Program requirements, Student Trainees may be eligible to non-competitively convert to a career conditional or TERM appointment. If non-competitively converted, the full promotion potential of the position will be to the GS-9 grade level. Conversion is not guaranteed and is based on the need of the agency.
